Cocks Arquette – Cocks Arquette

Intriguing, inventive and downright insane are some of the words that could perhaps be used to describe the upcoming band Cocks Arquette and their debut self-titled release. However, these words don’t even come close to what Cocks Arquette exude from their music, which is 40 minutes of bizarre constantly-changing movements of music. Made up of three tracks (and one minute long introduction), ‘Cocks Arquette’ is simply a manic session indulging in a number of different genres and styles which are all melded together into one big coherent mess that is bizarrely astounding and intriguing.

‘Cocks Arquette’ seems to meld together numerous genres that often aren’t seen together, especially within the same tracks. The album seems to shift along from roaring punk rock moments, with screaming vocals, and then suddenly shift into ambient drone sections and other genres. It is a bizarre and unusual musical experience, though one that is incredibly intriguing and listenable. The album feels odd, as the music itself, feels incredibly crazy and random, with there being no real direction to where it is all headed. However, the music itself seems to just work, as Cocks Arquette back it all up with what is an incredibly energetic and manic performance, that makes their crazy tracks work well in terms of an overall album. There’s method to the madness being demonstrated in the songs. Madness that is utterly confusing, manic and completely brilliant.

In terms of album experiences, ‘Cocks Arquette’ is one that clearly isn’t going to win the hearts of everyone who listens to it. To some extent, it is a fairly demanding experience, as the three 13-minute long tracks have so much going on in them that it might be difficult for some listeners to commit to the whole album experience. The manic shifts and turns in the dynamics might also confuse some listeners to the point of giving up. I’d wager though, that this is part of what Cocks Arquette want to present with their music, as they want to create an album experience that is confusing, manic and crazy. The whole madness of the album is what makes the album experience, and it is appealing and enjoyable, in some way that is as weird as the music itself.

Is Cocks Arquettes’ debut album a brilliant musical journey created by brilliantly musical masterminds who know exactly what they are doing? I personally have no idea. Either ‘Cocks Arquette’ is an album that has been clearly thought out, with every musical moment and shift being carefully considered in terms of creating an overall album experience, or it is an album that has been created on the fly by musicians who have no idea what they’re doing, but they have some vague sense of what it is they want to create. Either one of these wouldn’t surprise me, and either one would imply that there is some brilliant and mad creative process going on behind the band. Whatever it is that Cocks Arquette have, it is working madly well, even if it makes absolutely no sense at all.
