Mommy Shoots A Reindeer – Udarnik

From the Netherlands comes Udarnik, an up and coming punk/grunge band full to the brim of angry loud rock music. On their debut album ‘Mommy Shoots A Reindeer’, Udarnik demonstrate their own style of the varying genres, showing that they have a lot to offer when it comes to the loud and angry genres of music. Featuring the somewhat typical elements of fast, pacy and crunchy guitar, accompanied by manic drums and bass and loud roaring vocals, Udarnik show they have a great understanding of the genres, as well as a good presentation of it as well, that sounds as their own, rather than re-hashing and re-working the style of music of those who have preceded Udarnik.

On ‘Mommy Shoots A Reindeer’, there’s a number of strengths at play that make the whole album interesting and even fun at times.  Everything is pacy and loud, which is perhaps the main appealing element of Udarnik as a band. Although there’s a brilliant angry element at play on the album, there’s also an element of humour in the songs, as though Udarnik know how to not take themselves to seriously as a band. It’s an enjoyable element of Udarnik’s music, as it makes it just that little bit more enjoyable. It seems most of Udarnik’s ideas and techniques on ‘Mommy Shoots A Reindeer’ work well, with the album itself being presented in a strong light.

The negative traits of ‘Mommy Shoots A Reindeer’ fall in the rather repetitive use of certain instrumental techniques or ideas. At times, Udarnik display a brilliant creativity that isn’t normally seen in the genre, which is a great strength of Udarnik as a band. However, whilst the band display some creative ideas, a few of the songs on ‘Mommy Shoots A Reindeer’ seem to have similar instrumentals to each other, or similar vocal tracks to each other, adding one of the few disappointing elements of the album. Considering the creative ideas present on ‘Mommy Shoots A Reindeer’, it seems that the band could have pushed themselves just a little bit more on one or two songs.

Overall though, Udarnik have done themselves proud, presenting a very strong and enjoyable record. ‘Mommy Shoots A Reindeer’ features enough anger, aggression and general grumpy moods to make it a strong grunge-rock record, whilst at the same time sporting some humour and fun to make it enjoyable as opposed to overbearing. It’s a great sounding record and one that showcases the bands talents in brilliant lights. It seems there’s enough creative ideas by Udarnik to separate them from the average standard of the genre, and place themselves above it in a significant way.

Thanks for the good review! I think your criticism is correct: we could have done better on some songs and we could have put the limits further. But it was our first time in the studio with the three of us, so…. we did what we could and we are proud of the result! Thanks and kind regards.
