Departing from the family-friendly era of Disney-pop, inoffensive songs and a respectful public demeanor, Miley Cyrus has made a breakthrough in recent months as one pop music’s most unpredictable performers, with her now raunchy personality creating controversy and attention. On her latest album, Miley Cyrus channels everything over the past few years into her new creative effort, featuring a new style of music by the performer. ‘Bangerz’ features Cyrus utilizing a number of popular synth-pop elements to present her latest effort of popular and trending music. Whilst it certainly a branch of popular music that is sure to please people, it does raise the question of what the hell does Miley Cyrus really think she’s doing?
On ‘Bangerz’, Cyrus departs somewhat from the more friendly elements of her earlier music in favor of currently trending techniques and elements in music. The result of which is music that is popular, and to some extent, catchy and enjoyable. It’s easy to see why Cyrus is a popular performer in these current times, as ‘Bangerz’ contains each of the elements that make up a popular and trending album. There’s even reaffirmation of Cyrus’ talents as a performer, especially in the album’s opening song, which features what can only be described as brilliant singing. It opens the album up, suggesting great things to come of the album in terms of performance and instrumentals.
However, if we’re really honest with ourselves, Miley Cyrus has simply gone down the ‘sex sells’ route, with ‘Bangerz’ being the result of months of raunchy behavior. Whilst it sports some interesting songs, when it comes down to it, ‘Bangerz’ is simply a producer’s attempt of making money by jumping on the bandwagon of popular music. With this is an element of Cyrus’ new music not being creative in any way, with it simply be a Miley Cyrus version of everything else that has been done before. It might work at times, but it’s a shame that Cyrus isn’t pushing herself where it should really be mattering, which is in her actual music. Many of the techniques and ideas on ‘Bangerz’ is simply cliched and boring, ranging from the use of synth-pop elements, dub-step elements, auto-tune and numerous collaborations that don’t actually add anything to the music in any significant way.
On ‘Bangerz’, Miley Cyrus seems to have just demonstrated a wanting to make money, rather than an attempt to make something creative that can be regarded as a good creative effort. Perhaps making creative music is less preferable to simply making as much money as possible, which is understandable, but disappointing. ‘Bangerz’ is perhaps an album that will please many people, but it does remain true that it is an album that doesn’t really offer anything that is interesting or truly creative. In fairness to Cyrus, it actually is a bit of a step above the average, with it showcasing perhaps one or two enjoyable elements, but this isn’t really saying much in all honesty.
